Advantages and Disadvantages of Having Tea Cup Potbelly Pigs as Pets
Tea cup potbelly pigs are also known as micro, mini, and teacup pigs. Many sanctuaries and hog breeders and growers say they can grow up to maximum of 30 to 50 lbs only compared to a standard potbelly pig which can grow up to 150 to 500 lbs.
Tea cup potbelly pigs are already fully grown when they reach 3 years of age. They can be as tall as a cocker spaniel dog at this age and can live up to 15 to 20 years old. Their care and maintenance requirements are the same as a dog. These pigs can adapt to city life and apartment living. They can be walked on a leash and can be trained to use a litter box. These pigs are very affectionate and intelligent.
These tea cup potbelly pigs also have other attributes. They are order free and clean, non-allergenic, shed a little, do not bark, and have no fleas. However, there are also disadvantages of having tea cup potbelly pigs as pets. First is that adult tea cup potbelly pigs may raise a big challenge against their owners in terms of dominance and aggression and the owner needs to reprimand them strongly yet gently and teach them how to respect the authority of their owners.
Second disadvantage of having tea cup potbelly pigs as pets is that you are required to zone your area or live in rural areas or suburbs. These cute pigs also require commitment of energy and time just like a dog or even more than a dog.
Third thing is you need to look for a veterinarian who has knowledge in treating tea cup potbelly pigs. Check first your vet before getting yourself tea cup potbelly pigs.
Fourth disadvantage is many pig breeders are having a hard time predicting the eventual size of this breed of pigs. Therefore, some pigs may be 100 lbs instead of 30 or 50 lbs. Some breeders also have never seen tea cup potbelly pigs and simply sell their potbelly pigs as tea cup potbelly pigs just to get on with this craze. When these piglets are taken by these customers, they grow more than 100 lbs and are sent back to the seller.
Some farmers have sanctuaries with more than 80 rescued pigs simply because their previous owners were unaware of the breed they bought. They thought they were tea cup potbelly pigs but it turned out that they were potbelly pigs. Some breeders will take pigs back but will refuse to offer a refund. Thus, before buying one, you have to make sure that you know how to determine whether or not the pigs being sold are tea cup potbelly pigs.
